Capitalization
1. Always capitalize the first word of a sentence.
Example: The small white dog buried the bone in the yard.
Ladies often buy new dresses for special occasions.
2. Always capitalize the first letter of proper nouns such as names of places or people. This includes street, city, state, country, and continent names.
Examples: I used to life in Pittsburgh. (Pittsburgh is the name of a city)
People often travel to Colorado to go snow skiing. (Colorado is the name of a state)
People who live in Quebec, Canada speak French. (Quebec, and Canada are names of places; French is capitalized because it refers to
the country of France & France is a proper noun)
My house is on Poplar Street.
My favorite author is Kate Chopin.
3. Always capitalize titles that come before a person's name, or the abbreviations that are used for those titles.
Examples: I have a sore throat, so I am going to see Doctor Smith.
I have a sore throat, so I am going to see Dr. Smith.
You must read the book by Ambassador Johnson.
You must read the book by Amb. Johnson.
The article is about President George Bush.
The article is about Pres. George Bush.
Our first president was General George Washington.
Our first president was Gen. George Washington.
4. Always capitalize the names of months of the year, and days of the week.
Examples: January, February, March, April
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
5. Always capitalize the first word and the major words in a title of a book, movie, or short story.
Examples: My favorite book is A Confederacy of Dunces.
Another good book that you and your friends might enjoy is the Great Gatsby.
The first movie I ever saw was "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".
Our class read the short story "Eleven" in class last week.
